Recently, we were invited to spend a few days in Door County with my husbands sister and part of their family.

One of the things we love to do there is see live music in Egg Harbor. The performers are often on their way sam merrill upnot quite famous yet, but getting thereand the outdoor concerts can draw 1,500 to 2,500 people.

We packed our chairs, blankets, and a picnic dinner to see **Ashes & Arrows, semifinalists on *Americas Got Talent*.** A local group, Dorothy and the Peacekeepers, was scheduled to open.

But, as we all know, the weather sometimes has its own itinerary.

We watched a small but energetic squall move across Lake Michigan. We knew it would pass quickly, but when it arrived, it poured.

We ate our picnic inside the house we had rented and headed to the venue after the rain stopped. When we arrived, the stage was soaked. With electrical equipment involved, the outdoor concert appeared to be canceled.

Most people had already given up and gone home.

Then we heard a volunteer announce that the show would go oninside the beautiful new library and event center across the street.

We climbed to the top floor and began arranging chairs. Because we jessica pegula were among the first people there, we landed in the front row.

Slowly, the room filled. Even the indoor porches along both sides were packed. What had been planned as a large outdoor concert became an intimate acoustic performance.

Dorothy sang one lovely song with the trios mandolin player, whom she had never met before. Then she graciously gave the rest of her time to Ashes & Arrows because they had traveled so far.

And they poured their hearts into that room.

Their harmonies were beautiful, and they had the audience completely captivated.

Then they became vulnerable.

They shared that one member had recently left the band rather than make the 17-hour van trip from Asheville, North Carolina. Their new mandolin player had stepped in at the last minute and learned about 30 songs in just a few days.

They had rehearsed the night before at a karaoke bar on a nearby island.

And this musician performed the entire concert from memory. He was remarkable.

The band also admitted how disappointed they had been. After reaching the semifinals of *Americas Got Talent*, they hoped this concert before more than 1,500 people would help them continue building their audience and their dream.

Instead, they found themselves in a much smaller room.

But here is where the real magic happened.

Because they were honest about their struggles and amy hood their hopes, the audience wanted to help them. People lined up to buy their merchandise. Several well-connected audience members stayed afterward to speak with them. And the event coordinator invited them to return next year.

They may not have reached the audience they expected.

They may have reached the audience they needed.

Ashes & Arrows reminded me that when you believe in your dream, show up through disappointment, accept help, and share your heart honestly, people feel it.

The energy you put into the world has a way of coming back to yousometimes through a door you never expected to open.
